Monsoon Preparation
Monsoon season is almost here and we here at SERVPRO of Avondale/Goodyear/Southwest Phoenix want to make sure you, as a homeowner or business owner, are prepared and know what to do to prevent flooding from occurring on your property.
Consider These Tips For Your Property
As an Avondale and Goodyear resident, you know that the summer monsoons are notorious for bringing heavy rains that can lead to flooding on the roadways and in homes and businesses. Some of the common issues we see take place are roof leaks or water entering in through doors or windows. Here are some things you can do to make sure you’re ahead of the game and prepared for when those storms arrive.
- Stay informed and updated with weather alerts in your area. That way you are aware of any incoming storms and if you’re in an area where flooding occurs, prepare in advance by picking up bags of sand so you can prevent water from flowing into your home, especially if you are in a lower elevated area.
- Inspect your roof for any damage such as damaged shingles. Be sure to hire an experienced roofer to make the necessary repairs.
- Inspect trees located around your property and have them trimmed when necessary. By doing this, you prevent large tree limbs from breaking off and causing damage to your roof or windows.
- Inspect the areas around your windows or doors to make sure they are properly sealed with no gaps for water to get through.
- If you have any patio furniture, be sure to store it in your garage or storage area or make sure it is properly secured. High winds can cause your patio furniture to be blown around and could possibly lead to broken windows.
Inspect Home Appliances To Prevent Water Damage
5/4/2022 (Permalink)
Dealing with water damage? Give us a call!
Water damage in your home can be an emergency that will escalate quickly, especially if you don’t take action right away. Different situations from everyday appliances can cause water damage to occur. Here are some examples of common water damages that we see take place in Avondale and Goodyear homes.
Washing Machine
The hoses located in the back of a washing machine can become damaged or worn down over time. It’s important to make sure the hoses are connected properly and to routinely inspect them for wear and tear so that you can make the necessary repairs.
Dishwasher
Make sure to routinely inspect the seal which is located around the door and prevents water from leaking out. You also need to access the hoses which are found by removing the front access panel. These hoses are what allow for the dishwasher to fill and drain.
Refrigerator
Your refrigerator can leak from a blocked or clogged drain or from the water line located behind the fridge. The water line can cause water to pool and collect under your fridge.
Routine inspections can help you identify wear and tear occurring on your appliances so that you can prevent a water leak from occurring in your home.
Preparing For A Power Outage In Your Business
4/5/2022 (Permalink)
Stay on top of your business' productivity during a power outage in your business.
The biggest storm activity Avondale, Goodyear, and the greater Phoenix area sees, is during our monsoon season which happens during the summer months. Occasionally, we’ll see the scattered storms during the fall and winter months but for the most part, the active rainstorms happen from June to September.
Now is the optimal time for storm preparation in the event of a power outage. When this occurs, your business’s productivity can be affected greatly. To avoid this, we put together a list of options to help keep your business up and running during a power outage.
Backup Generators
A commercial generator is a solution to have enough energy and power for your for your building for a limited time. Make sure you are properly trained on how to use a generator to avoid any malfunctions or fire hazards.
Use a UPS
A UPS is known as an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) that can prevent you from losing any unsaved data on your computer. A UPS provides emergency power drawn from the computers’ own batteries that allows you enough time to save your work and properly shut off your device.
Finding Offsite Wi-Fi Connections
When the power goes off, you lose connection to your Wi-Fi router. To resolve this, if you have a laptop running on it’s own battery, you can connect to other nearby Wi-Fi connections or you can create a hotspot from your mobile device.
All the above solutions aim to keep your business productivity in motion during a power outage so you don’t fall behind or disrupt your day to day processes.

SERVPRO Is Here To Help With Your Water Loss
12/31/2021 (Permalink)
We are faster to any size disaster!
In our previous blog entry on SERVPRO of Scottsdale, we identified the three categories of water which are: Clean, Gray, and Black. When a water loss occurs, it may start out as clean water, especially if it’s from a broken pipe or an overflowing faucet. But this can turn into a serious situation that can evolve to a higher water category.
The longer that water sits, the more it can change and cause more damage, especially if the water loss occurs on the second floor. This can cause water to leak through the insulation and damaging not only the insulation, but drywall and other materials.
Don't Delay, Call SERVPRO Today!
Anytime a water loss occurs in your home, give SERVPRO of Avondale/Goodyear/Southwest Phoenix a call right away. The longer that you let moisture sit, the higher the chances you have of mold growth occurring. Give us a call right away and we will discuss the best course of action needed to cleanup and dry out the moisture. We have the tools, knowledge and experience when it comes to taking care of your home.

Electrical Safety During The Holidays
10/28/2021 (Permalink)
SERVPRO of Avondale/Goodyear/Southwest Phoenix wants you to be aware of the potential safety concerns regarding holiday decorations.
Knowledge of electricity safety is a must, especially for the upcoming holiday season when you’re stringing up lights around your home and using extension cords or power strips. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA.org), “U.S fire departments responded to an estimated average of 770 home structure fires per year that began with decorations, excluding Christmas trees, in 2012-2018.” That statistic alone shows how vital it is to be knowledgeable and aware of electrical safety in your home during the holidays.
Candles
As mentioned in our previous blog, choose battery operated candles. Not only do they last longer and give you the same warm glow effect, it is safer in the long run. If you do decide to use candles, be sure to keep an eye on them and away from children and pets.
Lights
Do not string multiple strands of lights together. Only use lights designated for indoor use in your home or outdoor use for areas outside of your home. As for the bulbs, LED bulbs last much longer and are more energy efficient as well as producing less heat. Consider switching out your old lights with brighter LED lights.
Extension Cords and Power Strips
Do not place these under rugs or furniture as they can get hot. Be sure to check the cords for any damage or cracks.
Turn Off Lights
Last but not least, make sure you turn off lights inside and outside of your home before going to sleep to prevent a potential accident from occurring while you are sleeping.
Stay tuned for more upcoming blogs discussing safety concerns for holiday decorations!
Practice Halloween Fire Safety
10/27/2021 (Permalink)
Halloween is just a few short days away and if you haven’t already, now is the time to start hanging up those decorations! SERVPRO of Avondale/Goodyear/Southwest Phoenix would like you to be aware of the fire safety risks that some Halloween decorations can pose and how you can eliminate those risks this Halloween.
Decorations
Cornstalks, dried floral arrangements, crepe paper and spider webs are common decorative pieces. Make sure you place these items away from heat sources like candles, heaters, or lights.
Jack-O-Lanterns
Carving pumpkins can be a fun activity and is a tradition for many during the Halloween season. Instead of using candles, use battery operated candles, lights, or a glow stick to give you that spooky glow. Not only is it safer, but it will stay lit much longer and is safe to leave outside your door for all to see and enjoy.
Candles
Candles are fun and atmospheric to use for the Fall season. Not only can the warm glow give you that cozy feeling, but it can also add a nice scene to your home. When using candles, make sure it is never left unattended as it only takes a matter of seconds for flames to spread. Keep the candle on a sturdy surface away from children and pets. You also want to keep any flammable materials away from your candle to prevent anything from catching on fire.
Smoke Detectors
Lastly, you want to make sure that all your smoke detectors are working, tested and make sure the batteries are tested regularly.
These are just a few safety measures to consider when it comes to decorating this Halloween.
2021 Monsoon Season
10/26/2021 (Permalink)
This year's monsoon season is a wrap!
Monsoon season has wrapped up here in Avondale, Goodyear and the greater Phoenix area. What a monsoon season we experienced! We saw everything that monsoons have to offer, from strong winds, heavy rains, and flooding, which was a nice change from last year’s nonexistent monsoon season.
Last year’s monsoon season had extreme heat and drought with only 2 days having measurable rainfall which put 2020 on record for being the driest monsoon. 2021, on the other hand, was the complete opposite, with 23 days of measurable rainfall and is on record for being the second most recorded. With July being the wettest month, the drought conditions in the state have improved to where only 14% of Arizona is in Extreme Drought conditions compared to the start of the year where 73% was in Exceptional Drought conditions. Monsoon seasons and rainfall varies year to year so we never know what we’re going to get during next year’s monsoon season. We can only hope that it will provide the state with much needed moisture that our beautiful state so desperately needs.

Toilet Supply Line Leak
Our SERVPRO technicians arrived to a townhome that had been extremely affected by serious water damage. This homeowner was out of town at the time and was also in the process of selling her townhome. The homeowner’s realtor had stopped by the townhome to discover standing water and major water damage which had occurred on the second floor in the master bathroom. This was caused by the toilet supply line which had steadily leaked into the first floor living room and kitchen causing parts of the ceiling to collapse. The carpet, carpet pad, baseboards, drywall, and insulation were affected and had to be removed as well as the bathroom vanity and cabinets, and the cabinets and island in the kitchen.
Always Here To Help
Our SERVPRO technicians worked hard to remove all the affected materials. Our dehumidifiers were put in place to effectively dry out the process to ensure all the moisture is removed to prevent future mold growth. You can trust SERVPRO of Avondale/Goodyear/Southwest Phoenix with our equipment and process to get your home back “Like it never even happened.”
Water Damage In Your Kitchen
10/21/2021 (Permalink)
Once your kitchen appliance issues are resolved, give SERVPRO a call to handle the dryout and cleanup!
Kitchen appliances can be the culprit for water leaks that occur in your kitchen. SERVPRO of Avondale/Goodyear/Southwest Phoenix has answered the call for many Avondale and Goodyear residents experiencing water damage issues.
Dishwasher
Many homes nowadays include dishwashers, matter of fact, its very rare to come across a home that doesn’t have one included in the kitchen. Although they are a huge convenience when it comes to daily chores, they can succumb to wear and tear. Be sure to perform routine inspection to make sure there are no water leaks from the door gasket or hoses.
Refrigerator
Every household needs a refrigerator for their food. Refrigerators can get blockages in the drain hose caused by food or debris. There can also be damage to the water line such as cracked water lines that can cause water to accumulate under and around the refrigerator. This is an occurrence our technicians have seen take place many times.
Garbage Disposal
Another common occurrence that we see take place is a leak occurring from the garbage disposal. Drain lines or loose connection can cause water to leak from the sides. A busted seal inside of the disposal can cause water to drain out the bottom.
Here To Help
Whatever the cause may be for your kitchen appliance having a water leak, once a plumber resolves the issues, our SERVPRO technicians can respond to handle the cleanup and to assess the damage to thoroughly identify where the moisture is at so it can be properly dried out.

Fire Safety In Your Home
9/30/2021 (Permalink)
Practice fire safety in your home by having an escape plan in place.
Fire safety is an important factor when it comes to the safety of you and your family. You want to ensure that in the event of a fire, you and your family are well prepared and informed on what to do if a potential fire were to take place in your home. The Red Cross has compiled a simple list of the top tips for fire safety.
- Make sure you have smoke alarms installed on all levels of your home, inside bedrooms and outside the bedroom area.
- Regularly test your smoke alarms every month to ensure that they are working properly. To make it easier, mark a day on your calendar or include a reminder on your phone to make sure you test your alarms.
- Have an escape plan in place with your family or those you live with. Include all the exit points for how to safely escape during a fire. Make sure you have a safe meeting place where you can all meet up once you’ve escaped.
- If a fire does occur, do not waste any time, and get out of your home immediately. Do not try and gather items or go back in once you’ve escaped. Remain outside a safe distance and call 911.

Smoking is still the leading cause of home fire deaths. Most of the fires start on balconies and porches. It’s easy for someone who is smoking to relax and fall asleep causing them to drop a lit cigarette to the floor and having the carpet catch on fire. If you do smoke, always make sure you are outside and that you are alert and aware. Make sure that you never leave a lit cigarette unattended and fully put out the lit cigarette when finished with it.
Smoke Alarms Save Lives
5/24/2021 (Permalink)
Make sure all the smoke alarms in your home or business are working properly.
Fires Can Spread Quickly
A fire can spread in an instant and can be life threatening to a building’s occupants. This is why smoke alarms are crucial to homes and businesses to ensure that all occupants can evacuate safely and quickly as possible.
According to the National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA), “Almost three of every five home fire deaths resulted from fires in homes with no smoke alarms (41%) or no working smoke alarms (16%). This fact alone shows the significance of having a working smoke alarm. SERVPRO of Avondale/Goodyear/Southwest Phoenix has provided you with some smoke alarm tips because smoke alarms save lives.
- Install smoke alarms on every level of your home and outside of all the sleeping areas. It’s also recommended to install alarms in all bedrooms.
- Make sure all smoke alarms are connected so that if one smoke alarm goes off, all the smoke alarms will sound off.
- Test your smoke alarm monthly to make sure that they are working properly by pressing the test button.
- If your smoke alarm sounds off, make sure everyone evacuates and waits outside.
- Replace your smoke alarm every 10 years.
Road Safety During A Haboob
5/20/2021 (Permalink)
Know what to do if you find yourself in a haboob or dust storm while driving.
You’ve seen the images and videos on Phoenix news stations and social media of large walls of dust moving across the Valley, you’ve seen the aftermath of dusty vehicles, downed trees from high winds, you may have even had to pull over while driving or run inside to avoid getting sandblasted. These large-scale dust storms, otherwise known as haboobs, go hand in hand with monsoon season.
Road Safety
Arizona’s monsoon season typically occurs from June to September when temperatures are at its highest. When thunderstorms are happening, they send down microbursts which spread out and create dust storms or haboobs. It’s important to know what to do in case you find yourself trapped in a haboob while you are out driving.
- Slow down and safely pull off the road or into a nearby parking lot if possible.
- Turn off your headlights. Some people think they should put on their hazard lights but it is advised NOT to do so. The reason is because when there’s a dust storm or haboob, visibility is extremely low. If you are pulled over and have your lights on, you don’t want to confuse a car that is behind you and cause them to potentially run into you.
- Take your foot off the brake pedal and put the vehicle in park. Remain in your vehicle until the storm passes.
What To Do With A Toilet Overflow
5/13/2021 (Permalink)
Handle toilet overflows right away to avoid the spread of potential contaminated water throughout your home.
Toilet overflows can turn into a real health hazard to your Avondale home. Contaminated water can spread hazardous germs and bacteria that if not treated and cleaned properly, can cause health effects to its occupants. SERVPRO of Avondale/Goodyear/Southwest Phoenix put together these simple steps for what you need to do when you encounter a toilet overflow.
- Turn off the water by locating the shut off valve that is found behind the toilet.
- Inspect the color of the water to see if it is contaminated. If the water is gray or black, this indicates that the water is contaminated. Carefully soak up the water that is pooling on the floor and be sure to wear gloves when doing so.
- Use a plunger to try and remove the clog in the toilet. If that doesn’t help, call a plumber to take care of the issue.
- Once the plumber leaves, give SERVPRO of Avondale/Goodyear/Southwest Phoenix a call to handle the cleanup, especially if contaminated water is involved. We have the cleaning products needed to effectively cleanup sewage contaminated water. We will also assess the area to see where any moisture from the overflow has traveled, clean and remove any materials that are affected, and dry out the moisture. SERVPRO is here to get your home back on track and make it “Like it never even happened.”

Prepare In Advance For Storms
1/14/2021 (Permalink)
Protect your home now from future storms.
It is January 2021 which means Happy New Year! Everyone here at SERVPRO of Avondale/Goodyear/Southwest Phoenix hopes you’re having a great start to the new year and wishes you success and happiness for 2021.
Prepare Your Home
Storms in the southwest Phoenix areas have been pretty non-existent so far with 2020 having only 15 days of measurable rain. The last day the Valley received some moisture was on December 10th which ended the 110 day dry streak. Although much of the state is experiencing severe drought due to a dry winter, now would be the optimal time to start repairs on your home for the monsoon season which typically begins in June. Before that time arrives, here’s what you can do in the meantime to prepare your home:
- Inspect the roof for damages such as broken or missing shingles and make the necessary repairs.
- Examine the trees that surround your home and trim or remove the ones that look like they could cause damage during high winds that monsoon storms bring.
- Make sure your home’s draining system is working properly to prevent water from pooling in your yard.
- Examine your windows, doors, and exterior of the home for any cracks that could allow for water to enter.
Even though the Phoenix area has no foreseeable storms in the near future, it is still a good time to plan and ahead by making any necessary repairs to your home to prevent any storm damage from occurring once monsoon season arrives.

Halloween Fire Safety Tips
10/29/2020 (Permalink)
Opt for battery powered candles instead of real candles when it comes to jack-o-lanterns this Halloween!
The fall season is in full swing here in Avondale and the rest of the Phoenix area! We have finally reached chilly temps (at least for us Phoenicians), which can only mean one thing. Yes, you guessed it! Halloween is just around the corner! Even though things may be a little different this year due to COVID, you are still able to celebrate safely in the comfort of your own home. SERVPRO of Avondale/Goodyear/Southwest Phoenix have put together some fire safety tips to make certain that you and your family are safe this Halloween!
Be Safe This Halloween
Be super careful when using candles. Be sure to place them away from items that can easily catch on fire. Position them on a stable surface to prevent them from accidentally being knocked over.
When it comes to carving jack-o-lanterns, opt for battery powered candles as opposed to the real deal. They last much longer, especially if you’re setting them outside.
Hanging spooky lights in and around your home for Halloween decorations can give you a spooky ambiance. Be sure to situate lights away from flammable fabrics and items such as gauze, crepe paper, and fake spiderwebs.
Most importantly, make sure you have planned escape routes in your home in the event of a fire possibly occurring. Also, make sure all smoke alarms in your home are working properly to ensure you and your family are safe.

SERVPRO has the knowledge and expertise when dealing with fire damage cleanup.
SERVPRO of Avondale/Goodyear/Southwest Phoenix has had several occurrences this year in which our SERVPRO crews responded to numerous residential properties dealing with the aftermath of a fire. Our office answered the call from a home owner who was dealing with a fire damage situation in their home located in Southwest Phoenix. Once the fire trucks left and the home was left in chaos and disarray, SERVPRO of Avondale/Goodyear/Southwest Phoenix was contacted and our crews arrived to help ease the stress on this family’s life.
The fire started from an electrical fire in the exhaust fan located in the bathroom which led to heavy smoke and soot damage throughout the rest of the home. There was charred structural framing of roof joists which had to be replaced. Extensive roof repairs were completed on the home as well as having the ceilings removed. All the insulation was heavily smoke damaged which led to them being removed. Once the cleanup of the smoke and soot damage was completed and all affected materials were removed, reconstruction on the home began.
We understand that this situation can be hard on our customers which is why SERVPRO is here to help you through this process. Our crews are experienced when dealing with fire and smoke damage, no matter how big or small, we are always here to help.
Fall Autumn Storms In Avondale and Goodyear
10/26/2020 (Permalink)
Autumn rainstorms in Avondale and Goodyear can be intense. If your home is dealing with flood damage from these rainstorms, give our office a call!
Even though we reside in the Arizonan desert, Avondale and Goodyear residents are still prone to flooding during those scattered autumn rainstorms that we see move into the Valley each year around this time. Next week, we’ll see our 90 degree temps dip into the mid 80’s and low 70’s with a 40% chance of rain on Monday. After a not so active monsoon season, this moisture is very well welcomed as we are finally receiving cooler temperatures after a scorching hot summer. These infrequent rainstorms during this time of the year can bring flooding to city streets causing damage to residential and commercial properties.
Prevent Damage During Flooding
In order to minimize flooding damage to your property, here are some safety tips so you're prepared for the next incoming storm. Inspect your property and make any necessary repairs such as roof repairs and fixing/cleaning out gutters. You can also buy sandbags to have on hand to place as a barrier around your home, especially if your property is in a low elevation area. The sandbags will prevent water from entering your home. Once the storm has subsided, be sure to inspect your home and again, inspect your home for any new damages that may have occurred.

Wildfire and Brushfire Safety Preparation Tips For Avondale and Goodyear Residents
10/9/2020 (Permalink)
Brushfires are a hazard in the area due to the dry climate and heat.
National Fire Prevention Week is currently taking place and as you already know from our previous blog, the theme this year is “Serve Up Fire Safety in the Kitchen!” SERVPRO of Avondale/Goodyear/Southwest Phoenix would like to help you and your loved ones with safety tips in the event of a possible wildfire or brushfire occurring near your home. Although wildfires and brushfires are not exactly a part of this year’s theme, we still feel it’s crucial information for Avondale and Goodyear residents to know since we do live in a dry desert climate.
According to the National Weather Service, Arizona has experienced the second hottest and third driest summer in over 100 years. According to Maricopa.gov, the top hazards we face in Maricopa County are flooding and wildfires. Monsoon season is officially over and we are still dealing with triple digit temperatures so wildfires and brushfires occurring at this time of year is still very likely. Here are some tips to practice with your family and loved ones to ensure everyone’s safety if a wildfire or brushfire is threatening your home.
Stay Informed
- Make sure you’re signed up to receive emergency notifications on your cell phone.
Have A Plan
- Create a disaster plan that accounts for everyone’s needs and safety. The plan should detail all possible exit routes from your home and identify where everyone should meet, preferably outside your home and another spot that’s included away from your home at another safe location.
Ready To Go
- Create a go bag which is essentially items in a bag that you can grab and take right away when you’re needing to make a quick exit during an emergency. Examples of items to place in your go bag include bottled water and snacks for energy, extra clothes, blanket, important documents, cash, rechargeable battery for your phone, first aid kit, flashlight with extra batteries, important medications and child care supplies. Of course, everyone’s needs vary so feel free to make whatever adjustments needed.
This past summer, areas around Scottsdale experienced brushfires which quickly spread near residential areas causing evacuations for many homes. The increase of dried vegetation this year was due to moisture from 2019 and early 2020 that caused for new growth of vegetation which eventually dried up. Because of the dry climate that we live in, it is important to know what to do and to be ready if a possible wildfire or brushfire occurs near your home.

SERVPRO of Avondale/Goodyear/Southwest Phoenix is doing what we do best which is continuing to provide fire and water cleanup and restoration services as well as mold remediation and COVID-19 disinfection to customers dealing with stressful situations.
Recently, we had a customer dealing with a water damage situation in which their upstairs neighbor had an extensive water loss situation that caused damage to our customer’s unit. The homeowner living upstairs was unfortunately not taking care of the water loss occurring in their own home which caused our SERVPRO technicians to do further inspecting and demo to be able to ensure our customer’s safety. The ceiling, walls, and floors in our customer’s home were affected. We initially tried to dry the affected structures in place but due to the unknown causes of the water loss to the upstairs unit, our technicians had to open the ceiling to make sure that there was no microbial growth in the space between the units.
Here at SERVPRO, we care about our customers with our main goal of getting their property back to its previous condition “Like it never even happened.” Every so often, we’ll encounter situations such as this one where another homeowner will make the situation a bit difficult but nonetheless, we strive to take care of our customers as much as we can.

In recent years, we’ve seen huge dust clouds and massive walls of dust completely blanket parts of our city during an incoming monsoon. As we near monsoon season, it’s important to be aware of the possible hazards that can affect your property.
SERVPRO of Avondale/Goodyear/Southwest Phoenix has compiled a list of tips to help get your property prepared to avoid any haboob damage.
- The aftermath of a haboob can cause downed trees throughout the Valley so make sure to trim trees that are around your property to prevent them from causing damage to your windows or roof.
- Inspect your roof or have a professional inspect for you to ensure there are no damages. Haboobs are typically followed by monsoon downpours and the last thing you want to deal with is rainwater pouring into your home.
- If you have any outdoor furniture or patio umbrellas, be sure to place them in your garage or storage to prevent it from flying away during the haboob’s high winds and possibly causing damage to your home.
By following these steps, we hope that your property remains safe once the monsoon dust storms arrive. If your property is faced with storm damage, give SERVPRO of Avondale/Goodyear/Southwest Phoenix a call at 623-537-9999. We are always here to help.

Smoke Alarm Safety
5/19/2020 (Permalink)
Smoke alarms can save lives.
When was the last time you’ve tested the smoke alarms in your home? Do you remember the last time you switched out the batteries? According to the National Fire Protection Association, three out of five home fire fatalities happen in homes where smoke alarms aren’t working properly or where there are no smoke alarms installed. SERVPRO of Avondale/Goodyear/Southwest Phoenix wants you and your loved ones to be safe so we put together these simple steps.
- Make sure your home has the right amount of smoke alarms. This depends on the size of your home. Ideally, you want a smoke alarm on each floor and located outside of bedrooms and the kitchen area.
- Make sure that smoke alarms are all interconnected so that if one goes off, all the other smoke alarms alert as well.
- Test your smoke alarms at least once a month by pressing the test button and switching out batteries when necessary.
- Clean around your smoke alarm and remove any dust or spiderwebs.
- Replace smoke alarms after 10 years.
It’s important to make sure your home is equipped with the proper smoke alarms so that you and your family can be alerted of a possible fire in your Avondale or Goodyear home.

Prevent A Clogged Toilet
5/12/2020 (Permalink)
An overflowing toilet is no fun. Avoid the stress by following these simple steps.
Dealing with a clogged toilet can be a nuisance when it come to your home or business, especially when it decides to overflow. As a result, you’re left with contaminated water pooling on your bathroom floor or, even worse, if your bathroom is located on the second floor, you also risk a potential leak occurring on the first floor.
SERVPRO of Avondale/Goodyear/Southwest Phoenix has put together these simple steps to prevent a clogged toilet from occurring.
- Do not use too much toilet paper. Only use what you need. Trying to flush too much toilet paper at once can cause a clog to occur because toilet paper doesn’t dissolve all at once. If more is needed, flush the toilet, use what is needed, and flush the toilet again.
- Do not flush anything other than toilet paper. Do not flush things like paper towels, facial tissues, or wipes. Even though wipes say they are flushable, do not flush but instead, dispose of them in the trash.
- If you have pets or little ones around, you may want to close the lid to prevent them from accidentally dropping something like a toy or small object that can easily become lodged in the drain.
We hope that by following these simple steps, you can prevent a clogged toilet from overflowing and causing damage to your home or business. If you do find yourself having to deal with an overflowing toilet, you can call SERVPRO of Avondale/Goodyear/Southwest Phoenix right after the situation has been dealt with by a plumber. We can handle the cleanup, especially when it comes to contamination factors.
Prevent Floods In Your Business
3/27/2020 (Permalink)
Make sure your business is prepared ahead of time to prevent floodwaters from affecting your property.
Avondale and Goodyear residents know all too well that an incoming storm can happen in a flash, especially during our summer monsoon season. The skies can be sunny one moment, and dark cloudy skies the next, signaling an incoming storm. Because of this, it’s always best to be prepared in order to protect your business from flooding that can occur on your property. Here is what SERVPRO of Avondale/Goodyear/Southwest Phoenix recommends.
1. Install a Sump Pump
A sump pump works by quickly extracting and removing water from the interior of your business.
2. Clean Gutters
Be sure to clean out the gutters on your property to assure that there’s no blockage to prevent water from draining properly. If the gutters remain clogged with debris, you prevent water from draining from your roof which could lead to the possibility of a roof leak. Make sure that you clean out the gutters and position them to drain away from the property.
3. Use Sealants
Make sure you have your property fully inspected for any openings such as cracks or holes. When these are left unattended, you allow for the possibility of more water entering your building when floodwater is on the rise.
These are some simple steps that business owners can do to prevent flooding from happening to your property.

SERVPRO has the equipment to thoroughly dry out your office space when it comes to water damage.
SERVPRO of Avondale/Goodyear/Southwest Phoenix received a call from a Phoenix business that was experiencing extensive water loss in their high-rise commercial office space. A security guard for the building had noticed that water was pooling outside of the entrance. Upon closer inspection, the first floor was covered in water which was leaking from the ceiling. Five floors in this commercial space were affected. The initial cause of the water damage happened on the fifth floor was due to a failed plumbing fixture. Each affected floor below the fifth floor had water soaked carpets and damaged ceiling tiles. Thankfully, the entire office space was vacant so there wasn’t additional damage to office furniture, equipment, or loss of production time.

The cooler double digit temperatures, (still in the 90’s but we’ll take it), and the overcast skies have marked an excellent beginning to the official start of the fall season and we all know what that means! Sweater weather, Halloween decorations, pumpkin everything, and let’s not forget the candles which can add that fall ambiance we so desperately wanted during 110+ degree temps in the summer. While they may be calming and aromatic, they can pose a serious fire hazard if the proper precautions are not taken. Here are several candle safety tips to take to avoid a potential house fire from occurring.
- Keep your hair and loose clothing away as you’re lighting the candle.
- Never leave candles unattended. Always blow them out before leaving a room or going to bed.
- Keep candles away from anything that can easily catch on fire.
- Make sure the candle is on a stable surface so that it won’t tip over or be knocked off.
- Use flashlights or battery-operated candle lights in the event of a power outage.
Although candles are a nice touch to the start of a cozy season, it’s extremely important to practice fire safety to prevent an open flame from spreading in your home. According to the National Fire Protection Association, “more than one-third of home candle fires start in the bedroom”. Simply following the above safety tips can ensure that you and your loved ones are safe while still enjoying the lovely fall atmosphere here in the Valley.

SERVPRO drying equipment is in place and ready to go.
SERVPRO of Avondale/Goodyear/Southwest Phoenix responded to a commercial business in a high-rise building in the Phoenix area that was dealing with significant water loss. Our office was alerted when a security guard at the office building had noticed a pool of water located near the ground floor entrance. Upon entering the premises, she had noticed water pooling over the entire floor, water dripping from the ceiling, and damaged ceiling tiles on the floor. This was all on the first floor only and upon venturing up, the security guard had discovered the water loss had occurred on the fifth floor which was all due to a failed plumbing fixture.
SERVPRO of Avondale/Goodyear/Southwest Phoenix arrived immediately once the plumbing issue was resolved. Each floor was dealing with water soaked floors and water damaged ceilings. Luckily, the office building was vacant so no further damage was done to office equipment. Usually, when a water loss occurs in a work environment, it can cause a loss in production time due to the cleanup and reconstruction that must take place. Our SERVPRO technicians work their hardest to be fast and efficient so that we can get your home or business back up and running “Like it never even happened.”
Prevent Storm Damage In Your Avondale Home
8/19/2019 (Permalink)
Prevent storm damage from affecting your Avondale home.
Monsoon season here in Avondale, Goodyear and for most of the Valley, has had a pretty slow kickoff than what we are normally used to seeing. This monsoon season, the valley has seen rainfall amounts of .27” which is 83% below normal than the 1.55” of what we’ve typically averaged. We have a good month left in the monsoon season and we have our fingers crossed that we’ll be receiving some much needed moisture in our desert Regardless of a slow monsoon season or not, it’s important for homeowners to understand storm damage and how to reduce the chances of it affecting your property. Here’s how to do so.
- Prepare for the storm season or incoming storms by inspecting your property and making the necessary repairs before a storm arrives.
- Prepare for an incoming storm by placing sandbags around your home to divert water and mud away from your property, especially if it’s in a low elevation area. Make sure to trim any tree branches that have the potential of landing on your home.
- Inspect your property after a storm.
- If you discover damages, make sure to repair them right away.
In addition, some extra safety measures to take into consideration are:
- Report storm damage to public streets and roads such as flooded areas, downed trees, and power lines.
- Pay attention to the news and weather stations so you are up to date on incoming storms.
- Make sure you know where to acquire materials such as sandbags.
- Prepare an emergency kit which should include a first aid kit, food and water that’s lasts up to 5 days, blankets, batteries and flashlights.

Water Damage From Dishwasher In Your Avondale Home
6/19/2019 (Permalink)
Did your dishwasher cause water damage in your kitchen? Give SERVPRO a call!
The dishwasher is a modern amenity that’s included in almost every household kitchen nowadays. It takes out the stress and hassle of playing paper, rock, scissors to decide who’s turn it is to do the dishes. SERVPRO of Avondale/Goodyear/Southwest Phoenix has seen its fair share of homes dealing with water damage from this kitchen appliance. It can take homeowners on quite the whirlwind of emotions once they discover a pool of water collecting on the kitchen floor. Here are some tips for preventing water damage from your dishwasher in your Avondale and Goodyear home.
Dishwasher Door
The door itself may have loose hinges which could cause water to leak out. You may need to tighten the latch and hinges yourself with a screwdriver. If you’re having any issues, you can always call a professional plumber.
Rubber Seal
The rubber seal around the dishwasher door may have some wear and tear which will cause water to escape. To prevent this, make sure to routinely inspect the rubber seal and replace if needed.
Damaged Hoses
All dishwashers are equipped with two hoses that can be accessed by removing the bottom front access panel. Inspect the hoses for wear and tear. If you notice any moisture collecting in this area, you may need to replace the hoses.
These are the most common causes that homeowners face when they’re dealing with water damage in their kitchen caused by their dishwasher. If you find that a water leak has taken place in your kitchen, here are some steps to take:
- Shut off the main water supply.
- Shut off the electricity if need be, especially if water is pooling near outlets or electronic devices.
- Call a plumber to resolve the dishwasher plumbing situation.
- Once the plumbing issue is resolved, call SERVPRO of Avondale/Goodyear/Southwest Phoenix to notify them of your water damage. We will send our technicians out as quickly as we can.
- While you’re waiting for SERVPRO to arrive, use towels to soak up as much standing water as you can. The longer you let the water sit, the more damage it can cause.
- Once SERVPRO arrives, we’ll walk you through the process and begin drying out the area with our fans and dehumidifiers.
Please give our office a call to find out more information at 623-537-9999. SERVPRO is always here to help 24/7.

Stay safe during thunder and lightning storms this monsoon season!
Monsoon season is just around the corner here in Avondale, Goodyear, and the rest of the Phoenix area. Monsoon storms will be here before you know it. With the constant rainstorms throughout the summer brings blowing dust, roaring thunderstorms, and a sky lit up with lightning bolts. Although a lightning storm can be exciting to watch unfold in the skies above, it’s always important to consider your safety when doing so. Outdoor Safety Precautions
- Avoid outdoor activity during a thunderstorm. If you find yourself outdoors and you hear thunder, immediately get indoors or seek shelter elsewhere in an enclosed space.

- Stay away from concrete floors and walls as electrical currents can travel through metal wires that are in the floors or walls.
Indoor Safety Precautions
- Avoid using water during a thunderstorm since electrical currents can travel through plumbing.
- Avoid using electronics.
- Avoid using corded phones. Cell phones and wireless phones are okay.
These are the main outdoor safety precautions you want to follow when it comes to outdoor storm safety during the monsoon season.

Holiday Safety Tips for Avondale, Goodyear and Southwest Phoenix Residents
12/11/2018 (Permalink)
When it comes to Christmas decorations, follow these tips to keep your family safe.
It’s the most wonderful time of the year, isn’t it? Cooler temps mean the holiday season is in full swing! Temperatures here in Avondale, Goodyear and Southwest Phoenix have finally cooled down to where we actually get to make use of our car heater in the mornings! But we’re not complaining, these cooler temperatures are always a nice welcome after the 115 degree summer temperatures we face.
With Christmas just around the corner, SERVPRO of Avondale/Goodyear/Southwest Phoenix wants you to be safe. We’ve put together a list of Holiday Safety Tips as it’s important to be reminded of general safety tips to keep you and your loved ones safe when it comes to decorations this season.
- Inspect electrical decorations such as Christmas lights, lighted garland and Christmas displays. Make sure the sockets aren’t cracked or damaged. Also check for exposed wires and loose connections as you want to prevent shocks and a fire from occurring.
- Protect electrical cords from damage such as being squashed by furniture or against walls. Do not have them running underneath rugs or hang them using staples.
- Don’t overload the electrical sockets. This is a common cause for holiday fires. Plug only one high-wattage appliance into each outlet at a time.
- Avoid connecting more than three string lights as this can blow a fuse.
- Do not connect extension cords together. Take time to find the correct length to avoid them getting tangled or stretched.
- Keep decorations such as garland, tinsel, crepe paper and anything other decorations that are flammable away from heat sources such as a fireplace, candles, and space heaters. Be sure to keep them at least 3 feet away.
- If you have a fresh Christmas tree, don’t forget to water it daily. A dry tree can quickly erupt in flames.
- Keep an eye on candles that are lit. Never leave lit candles unattended. Instead, try opting for battery opted candles.
- When hanging lights outside, do not use nails or staples as they can cause damage to the wires. Use hooks or hangers which are recommended for outdoor usage.
- Always remember to unplug the lights when you are away from home or asleep.

Storm Safety Tips
10/25/2018 (Permalink)
Flooded roadways like this were seen during recent storms here in Avondale, Goodyear and Southwest Phoenix.
The monsoon season has officially wrapped up here in Avondale, Goodyear and Southwest Phoenix. We saw quite the storm activity in the Greater Phoenix area which led to dust storms and record rainfalls causing flooded roadways, knocked down trees and power-lines. Because of this, many homes and businesses experienced massive amounts of water and mold damage due to these heavy storms. Here at SERVPRO, we decided to put together some information regarding storms here in the Valley and how you and your family can be safe during one.
- Make sure to clean out your roof drains so that rain can properly drain to prevent water from collecting on your roof.
- Take time to trim trees around your home to prevent them from breaking and possibly falling on your home or vehicle.
- Secure outdoor furniture to prevent them from blowing away during heavy winds. Make sure children’s playground equipment is secured to the ground and any smaller outdoor furniture items are stored indoors or in your garage.
- It’s always helpful to have weather alerts enabled on your mobile or desktop devices so you’re notified of an approaching storm and can prepare in advance.
- If your home or your businesses is in a low elevated area, consider stocking up on sandbags to prevent flooding from entering your building structure.
- Avoid travelling during a storm at all costs, especially here in Phoenix as roadways can flood quickly. If you see a flooded road, do not try and drive through. It’s best to turn around and find an alternate route or pull over and wait for the storm to pass before getting back on the road.
Monsoon season has officially passed but that doesn’t mean we won’t see a few scattered storms here and there. It’s best to apply these storm safety practices to ensure you and your loved ones are safe. If you are experiencing water damage or mold damage caused by storms, you can call SERVPRO of Avondale/Goodyear/Southwest Phoenix at (623) 537-9999. We’re always here to help.

- Yes, candles can be fun and can add a “spooky” ambiance. If you’re going to use candles, make sure you are nearby. NEVER leave lighted candles unattended, especially those that are in jack o’ lanterns that are left outside. You never know when heavy wind gusts or perhaps, someone could accidentally knock a pumpkin over leading to flames spreading. Instead, opt for battery operated candles which are much safer.
- Avoid using flammable decorations such as crepe paper for instance. You can use these but keep them away from heat sources such as lightbulbs, stringed lights and heaters. The same applies for decorations such as corn stalk material.
- Choose the right costumes that are made of flame-resistant materials. You also want to make sure they are the right size to prevent tripping or falling.
- Make sure to place reflective tape or stickers on costumes so that you are seen while out navigating streets at night. Provide your children with flashlights or glow sticks to carry while they are out trick or treating so that they are visible to drivers on the road.
- Travel in groups and always be on alert. Always use the crosswalk and obey traffic signals. Be extremely cautious when crossing driveways.
SERVPRO of Avondale/Goodyear/Southwest Phoenix provides these safety tips so that you can have a fun and safe Halloween!
Dryer Safety
10/11/2018 (Permalink)
When was the last time you cleaned out your lint filter?
Prevent a Dryer Fire in Your Home
Clothes dryers are a modern amenity in every household. Let’s be honest, they make the laundry process so much easier, right? If it weren’t for dryers, we’d still be hanging our clothes out on the clothes line which can be a little hard to do, especially when you live in the city. Oftentimes, due to our busy schedules, we forget about simple dryer maintenance such as cleaning out the lint filter, vacuuming underneath and around the dryer, and keeping all flammable materials stored away from the dryer. Here are some tips for Avondale, Goodyear and Southwest Phoenix residents to remember when it comes to dryer safety and maintenance.
- Do not leave your dryer running in an empty house. Always make sure you are nearby, just in case.
- Be sure to clean out the lint filter before and after each usage. You want to make this a habit in your laundry routine. Even a little lint buildup can lead to a potential fire starting.
- Do not store items on top or around your dryer. This includes items such as towels, blankets, clothes, etc. Do not store any flammables such as household cleaners nearby as well. In the event of a potential fire starting, you do not want to add additional fuel to a flame. Make sure to sweep or vacuum underneath and around your dryer to pick up any lint that may be collecting.
- Be sure to inspect the vent hose (located behind your dryer) for wear and tear. If your hose is plastic or a foil accordion style hose, replace with a metal hose as these are more durable. A plastic or foil accordion style hose can have a buildup of lint on the inside.
- Have your venting and exhaust system inspected every year. It’s best to contact a qualified professional to do some cleaning and inspecting to ensure that everything is running properly.
When it comes to heat-producing appliances, it’s best to practice extra caution, especially when it comes to your clothes dryer. Nearly 3,000 dryer fires are reported each year. Be sure to practice these safety tips to ensure your home and family is safe from potential fire damage. For more information on fire damage, contact SERVPRO of Avondale/Goodyear/Southwest Phoenix at (623)537-9999.
Practice Electrical Safety
10/10/2018 (Permalink)
If you detect a burning smell or sparks coming from an electrical outlet, be sure to contact a qualified electrician to inspect.
We use electricity every single day. From the moment we flip on a light switch or charge our phones, it’s there and will continue to be a part of our everyday routine. We oftentimes forget just how integral electricity is in our daily lives until we experience something like a power outage or forget to pay our electric bill. Simply put, electricity makes our lives so much easier. Nevertheless, we need to practice safety and caution when it comes to electricity in our homes or businesses. Here is some essential information regarding electrical safety that all homeowners and business owners in Avondale, Goodyear and Southwest Phoenix should be aware of.
- Don’t plug too many appliances that are in use in one outlet, especially if it’s a heat producing appliance such as a crock pot, toaster, or a space heater.
- Plug major appliances (such as stove, refrigerator, washer/dryer, microwave, etc.) directly into a wall outlet. Do not plug them into extension cords or power strips.
- Do not have electrical cords running underneath carpets/rugs as you run the risk of heat building up and potentially starting a fire.
- Do not use extension cords for an extended period. They are only meant for temporary usage.
- Hire a professional and qualified electrician to handle all electrical work. Don’t try and do it yourself to try and save a few bucks.
- If you’ve bought a new home or are planning on remodeling, make sure the electrical work is in accordance with local requirements.
If you encounter any electrical issues such as flickering lights, constant blown fuses or tripped circuits, a burning smell from an outlet, or sparks coming from an outlet, please contact a qualified electrician to assess the situation.
If you are dealing with fire or smoke damage from an electrical fire, contact SERVPRO of Avondale/Goodyear/Southwest Phoenix at (623) 537-9999. We are always here to help.
Why Is My Toilet Leaking?
10/9/2018 (Permalink)
Dealing with water damage from a toilet leak? Give SERVPRO a call today!
Possible Reasons For Your Toilet Leak
A large majority of homeowners will experience a toilet leak from time to time in their Avondale, Goodyear or Southwest Phoenix home. Toilet leaks are obviously zero fun to deal with, especially when you have no idea what to do when it comes to plumbing issues. You may notice water collecting around the toilet, water on the ceiling (if your bathroom is on the second floor), and an occasional sewer odor. This can be a stressful time, especially when you have no idea how the leak started. Your first thoughts could be, “Will I have to replace my toilet? How much will repairs cost?” It’s helpful to have at least some idea why the leak is occurring so that the necessary repairs can be made to stop the leak from happening. Here’s a list of some possible reasons as to why your toilet could be leaking.
- The flapper can become damaged or stuck in the down position or “flushed” position. When this happens, the tank will continue to fill and eventually water will overflow the tank.
- A crack in the toilet tank can occur which can cause a leakage. The crack on the tank won’t affect the toilet fill valve which will allow the tank to fill as it normally does after it has flushed which can cause a recurring leak.
- Water can seep through a broken or damaged supply line which can cause a toilet to leak. The rubber lining located in the supply line can also wear out as well.
- If you notice water collecting around the base of the toilet, you could have a damaged wax ring. The wax ring provides a watertight seal which prevents your toilet from leaking at the base. When the seal is damaged, a leak occurs. Another sign of a damaged wax ring is an unpleasant odor which allow for the sewer gasses to escape.
- A closet flange is a pipe fitting that allows a toilet to be mounted to the floor. It connects the toilet drain to the drain pipe. To repair this, you need to remove the toilet and the wax ring and replace with a new flange and wax ring.
These are just some possible reasons as to why your toilet could be leaking. If you’ve tried doing repairs yourself and you still find that your toilet is leaking, it’s best to contact a professional to make the necessary repairs before it causes extensive water damage. If the necessary repairs have been made and you’re now dealing with water damage, please give SERVPRO of Avondale/Goodyear/Southwest Phoenix a call at (623) 537-9999.

Prevent Water Damage From Your Washing Machine
10/3/2018 (Permalink)
Be sure to inspect your washing machine's supply hoses to ensure they are in good condition and free of wear and tear.
Washing machines are a modern convenience in the common household. They make our lives so much easier when it comes to doing multiple loads of laundry, especially if you have a full household. Let’s be honest, who wants to venture out to a nearby laundromat or even worse, whip out the old washboard? Over time, washing machines can start to wear out leading to several problematic issues such as flooding and excessive water damage in your Avondale, Goodyear or Southwest Phoenix home.
Flooding in your home can be extremely stressful and chaotic. From the damage it can cause to your home and personal belongings, to the dreaded bill that comes with repairing the appliance and for water damage restoration. Water leaks from washing machines are one of the top 10 sources of water damage in homes. Here is some helpful information for Avondale, Goodyear, and Southwest Phoenix residents to consider in order to prevent your washing machine from causing a water leak or flood in your home.
- Don’t use too much detergent. Using too much can cause a build-up in the washing machine’s overflow tube.
- Don’t overload the washing machine. Doing so will cause your washer to start shaking and could potentially cause your hoses to loosen.
- Inspect the supply hose to see if it’s showing signs of wear and tear. Look for cracks, worn tubing, or a loose connection. If the hose is loose, tighten the connection. If the hose is showing some wear and tear, replace with a reinforced steel braided hose.
- Replace supply hoses every five years, even if there’s no wear and tear. There may be damage on the inside of the hose and you don’t want to risk it deteriorating from the inside out.
- Consider replacing your water connections with a single lever shut off valve. This lever makes it much easier to shut the water off when, for instance, a sudden leak from your washing machine takes place. It’s also handy to shut off when you’ll be away from home for a few days. The last thing you want is to come home to a flooded home!
If you’re facing water damage from a washing machine in your Avondale, Goodyear, or Southwest Phoenix home, you can depend on SERVPRO to answer the call when you’re in need! SERVPRO of Avondale/Goodyear/Southwest Phoenix is available 24/7 to begin the restoration process of getting your home back to normal “Like it never even happened.” Call us today (623) 537-9999 for more information!
Avoid A Kitchen Grease Fire
10/1/2018 (Permalink)
Do not leave your stove unattended while it's in use.
Cooking. We all do it, some of us better then others, but we all do it, whether it’d be whipping up some scrambled eggs, cooking up some stir fry, or doing the three-course meal. Cooking is the leading cause of fire injuries and home fires in the United States. What can start as a small grease fire can eventually grow and spread to other areas of your home if it’s not safely contained. Here are some helpful tips to help Avondale, Goodyear, and Southwest Phoenix residents when it comes to safely putting out a grease fire in your home.
- Make sure you have a fire extinguisher in your kitchen and know how to use it.
- Be sure to have the handles on your pots and pans facing inwards as to avoid accidentally knocking it onto the ground.
- Do not leave the stove unattended while cooking. Always remain in close proximity of the stove when in use.
- Keep kitchen towels, pot holders, and anything that is flammable away from the stove.
- Watch the heat carefully. If the pan gets too hot, the grease will start to boil or splatter, and the pan will start to smoke which could lead to flames. When you notice the pan start to smoke, turn the heat down immediately and watch carefully.
- If a hot pan does catch on fire, use pot holders to place a lid or baking sheet on top of the pan. If you don’t have a lid or baking sheet available, you can also resort to using baking soda. Be sure to carefully pour it over the flames. The key here is to smother the flames. DO NOT use water or anything else that is flammable to try and put out the flames.
- If none of those options are working, use your fire extinguisher. If the flames do get out of hand, do not try and put it out. Instead, have you and your family evacuate immediately and call 911.
With the holidays coming up, many of us will be in the kitchen preparing large meals. To avoid a potential grease fire from happening, you can apply the above tips. Applying these safety tips will protect you, your home, and most importantly, your loved ones.
If you do find yourself dealing with fire or smoke damage in your kitchen from a grease fire, you can count on SERVPRO of Avondale/Goodyear/Southwest Phoenix to provide restoration services. Give SERVPRO of Avondale/Goodyear/Southwest Phoenix a call at (623) 537-9999.
Smoke Alarm Safety 101
9/28/2018 (Permalink)
When was the last time you tested your smoke alarm?
Smoke alarms can be a life saver. Literally. In a 2015 report from The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), “three of every five home fire deaths resulted from fires in homes with no smoke alarms (38%) or no working smoke alarms (21%)”. This statistic alone is startling and shows the importance of having smoke alarms in your home or business. SERVPRO of Avondale/Goodyear/Southwest Phoenix has some helpful tips for how to properly install and maintain them to ensure the safety of you and your family.
- Alarms should be installed on the inside and outside of bedrooms.
- Install a smoke alarm on each level of your home.
- Use an interconnected alarm system which allows for all alarms in your home or business to sound off when one alarm is set off.
- Do not install a smoke alarm near your kitchen as you don’t want any false alarms such as smoke from burnt toast.
- Test all smoke alarms once a month to ensure they are running properly.
- Replace smoke alarm batteries at least once every year.
- Replace your smoke alarm every 10 years. Be sure to check the back of your alarm for the manufacturer’s date so you know when to replace.
Nearly 3,000 deaths were reported in 2016 from home fires in the United States. Be sure to take the proper precautions to protect you and the lives of those around you by adhering to the recommended safety tips listed above.
If you find yourself dealing with Fire Damage, call SERVPRO of Avondale/Goodyear/Southwest Phoenix at (623) 537-9999 for additional information.
Water Damage From Household Appliances
9/26/2018 (Permalink)
Prevent water damage from major appliances in your home.
Nobody wants to deal with the hassle of discovering that a major appliance in your Avondale, Goodyear or Southwest Phoenix home has been leaking water while you’ve been away. Who wants to return home to discover that your floors, walls and belongings are completely soaked and covered in water? Here at SERVPRO of Avondale/Goodyear/Southwest Phoenix, we know that one of the leading causes for water damage in your home or business is due to a water leak from major appliances. Here’s a list of a few common appliances for you to keep an eye on when it comes to water damage.
Washing Machine
The hoses connecting to and from the washing machine can be damaged, loose or cracked. When this happens, water can start leaking. It’s important to inspect the hoses at least once a month to ensure that they are in good condition and are connected properly.
Dishwasher
Dishwashers are a modern convenience, especially for busy households which is why it’s important to perform routine inspections to ensure they keep running properly. Make sure to inspect the door gasket which is the rubber seal around the door that prevents the water from escaping. Check the door gasket for wear and tear and replace if needed. You also want to examine both hoses that all dishwashers are equipped with which can be done by removing the bottom front access panel. These hoses allow for the dishwasher to fill and drain. If you notice any wetness or moisture in this area, you need to replace the hoses.
Refrigerator
Food or debris can cause a blockage in the drain hose in your refrigerator. A clogged defrost drain is a common cause for a water leak from your fridge.
The plastic water line located behind your fridge can also be the culprit for a leaky fridge. The line can be damaged or cracked which can cause a slow leak to occur over time. Water can start to collect under your fridge which would be hard to see unless you regularly make an effort to pull your fridge out to inspect the floor and wall behind the fridge. Again, you want to inspect the water line to make sure it’s securely connected with no damage.
Over time, water leaks from a major appliance can lead to serious water damage. There’s also health concerns involved as wet areas can lead to mold growth. Avondale, Goodyear, and Southwest Phoenix residents, do not fret! No matter what the situation may be that has caused water damage, whether it’d be a water leak from a major appliance like your washing machine, dishwasher, refrigerator or another major appliance, SERVPRO of Avondale/Goodyear/Southwest Phoenix is available 24/7 to answer your call in your time of need.

When You Have A Biohazard Problem In Your Home
9/19/2016 (Permalink)
Mites, fleas, ticks, and even lice can become a problem when brought in by their original hosts.
Biohazard Problem in Your Home
Not all biohazards are chemicals or come from a sharps box on your physician's wall. They can come with owning homes and sometimes with business and office buildings. Biohazards can affect people's health, and create situations that can seem unbearable. Wildlife that has entered into the roof of any home or other building, or is even nearby, can bring infestations with them. Mites, fleas, ticks, and even lice can become a problem when brought in by their original hosts, especially when their hosts leave them behind or worse when they die inside of your building or home.
In Phoenix, biohazard problems exist in many locations, often with no one becoming aware of the source. Because of this, experts need to be consulted. SERVPRO is trained in not only restoration but also in the control and elimination of biohazards. Birds often bring with them different strains of bird mites, and while these tiny parasites cannot burrow into the skin, their bites create a risk of allergic reactions, intense itching, and secondary infections. Lice, also from birds, can infest people, and create the same discomfort, but in a worse way. Because lice can infest people, a hot, soapy shower won't suffice like it will with bird mites. Treatment with a pediculicide often means neurotoxins, creating an additional risk.
Ticks and fleas can also carry disease directly, but these do not travel as quickly as lice and mites can, and remain closer to their original location. These should still be considered as risks, and avoided. Having a professional team conduct the cleaning of an infested area that has possible biohazards such as these blood-sucking parasites. Deceased animals also found can be disposed of properly at the same time, and the area thoroughly sanitized and made risk-free again.
Signs of an infestation include unexplained bites, scratching for no reason, lice infestations when the risk factor for such is very low, or even small black dots on the skin that move quickly. Those are mites, and their bites can be very tiny, but extremely painful. If this sounds like a biohazard situation that you may be dealing with, SERVPRO of Avondale / Goodyear / Southwest Phoenix can help you eliminate the problem. Call us at (623) 537-9999 any time, day or night, and we will assist you in ridding your home of any biohazards that have been creating problems for you and your family.
Flash Floods and Water Damage

Phoenix Water Damage Can Happen from Flash Floods and Leaks
SERVPRO Pumps Out the Water and Mitigates Damages
Despite rare rainfall and a desert climate, the Arizona deserts are often home to some of the worst flooding events in the nation. The reason for this is a combination of climate, topography, and soil mixture, which in Arizona all combine to form highly flood-prone conditions. Generally, in the Sonoran Desert, when it rains it pours. And it pours a lot, with sudden and unexpected torrents of rain being commonplace during the wet seasons. However, other regions of the United States often have more rain in short periods of time than here, so why do we get hit with some of the worst floods?
The answer is quite simple. In Phoenix, water damage due to floods is ultimately the result of an extremely flat topography combined with clay-heavy soil. Phoenix is a construction company's paradise due to its large, flat, open spaces to develop into, but these cause problems during floods, where little terrain variation means floodwaters can rampage across neighborhoods and streets without much to stop them. Combine this with the clay-heavy and non-water absorbent soil of the desert, and you have a deadly mixture for fast-forming and wide-damaging flash floods.
To compound problems, rainfall in Arizona often comes in the form of violent but short sessions during which up to multiple inches of rain can fall in a period of minutes. This causes flash flooding, intense and heavy floods which form in minutes. Every few years, you may see some portion of highway on the nightly news, covered with water and swamped cars. This is one of the few natural disasters that can indeed hurt local homes, and unfortunately, there is not much to be done to prevent these occurrences from happening. However, at SERVPRO we are able to respond quickly after the disaster has happened and help residents to recover in a very short period. This means arriving on the site with the correct equipment and personnel to extract water and mitigate damages.
SERVPRO of Avondale / Goodyear / Southwest Phoenix has years of experience in dealing with the complexities of the Sonoran Desert and its climate and is ready after any major storm to deal with water damage in the local community. If you require our emergency restoration services, contact us 24/7 at (623) 537-9999.
Mold Damage: Mold Grows in the Desert?
7/27/2016 (Permalink)
Mold damage can be difficult to detect early on, and can't be removed by Phoenix homeowners.
Mold Can Grow in Warmer Climates
Mold damage is often thought to be restricted to the wetter climates of North America, and the US Southwest is often relatively careless when it comes to preventing mold damage. However, even in hot, dry places, mold can be a big problem for homeowners. Mold damage can be difficult to detect early on, and can't be removed by homeowners. In most cases, heavy deodorization and sanitation equipment must be used to rid a home of its mold colonies.
Dehumidification
The first step SERVPRO takes in many Phoenix mold damage removal jobs is to dehumidify the air. Often, mold colonies form in a particular room due to heavy and persistent humidity or wetness, and this must be taken care of as quickly as possible, along with any water damage to the area. This isn't always required, however, and your mold remediation process may be able to skip this step entirely.
Deodorizing Foggers
Ultra low volume (ULV) and thermal foggers work together to deodorize a room or home, as many types of mold release foul smells which can persist for extended periods of time unless handled precisely. These foggers are powerful, industrial-grade machines, and get the job done well.
Thorough Cleaning and Sanitization
Scrubbing off and sanitizing mold patches is tricky business, and requires specialized training. Some types of mold can cause ill health effects, so caution must be taken even as professionals work to remove the mold as quickly as possible. Also, fabrics such as shower curtains or drapes may need specialist cleaning or possibly replacement, as mold spores are microscopic and can penetrate into the tiniest crevasses of these fabrics.
SERVPRO of Avondale / Goodyear / Southwest Phoenix is experienced with all kinds of desert mold colonies and has helped countless local homes and businesses to scrub out mold from their properties. If you need professional mold cleanup and remediation services, call us 24/7 at (623) 537-9999 for a quote or services.

Mold Damage Around the Door Can Indicate Larger Problems within Your Phoenix Home
SERVPRO Can Restore Your Mold Damaged Phoenix Home to a Safe and Healthy Place
Mold damage in your Phoenix home can cause adverse health effects to you and your family. Mold growth also indicates something else may be wrong with your house--too high humidity (though not too often in Phoenix), moisture resulting from leaks or cracks in the foundation, or the aftermath of a flood. Molds are fungi that impact most people in one way or another. In many, it merely makes them feel uncomfortable. The reaction to allergens, mycotoxins, and even pollen vary among individuals.
Mold spores that are common all around your home need moisture to grow. It also requires an organic substance for nutrients. The reason it might be in your house could be because you have a water leak somewhere. This supplies the moisture that the mold requires for colonizing into large patches, visible or not.
When you call upon a professional mold remediation company like SERVPRO, expect quick service. They come and begin the inspection that is necessary to locate all of the areas in which mold is growing. Since the fungi can start to grow in as little as 48-72 hours, they know they have to work fast. They have the tools and devices to find the mold growths. It can be inside of the walls, below the flooring and above the ceilings. No carpet is left unturned if there is a hint of moisture buildup. After the inspection, the work begins.
This process starts with containment if more than an isolated mold patch is discovered. Air circulation by the HVAC system or fans must be stopped to prevent the movement of mold spores to unaffected areas of the property. All non-porous surfaces such as tile, metal and plastic can be cleaned and sanitized with green technology cleansers and disinfectant agents. Materials that cannot be cleaned, such as portions of drywall, ceiling tiles, carpets and padding, and some furniture, are wrapped, removed and discarded in an authorized location. This is always the last resort. SERVPRO's aim is to remediate your home in the most practical and least expensive manner.
Unfortunately, replacement of building materials that have to be torn out can occur. This means the sheet rock, whether replacing entire sheets or just a few patches to clean up the walls. It also means the cleaning and rehanging of the draperies and placing fabric cushions that have been cleaned and re-stuffed, if appropriate. As examples.
Commercial air purifiers and foggers are employed to sanitize and deodorize the affected areas of the home. Antifungal agents are used in the thermal foggers. Air scrubbers will suck in the ambient air and remove a large portion of the mold spores. SERVPRO will conduct a final walk-through to make sure that the known areas of mold infestations have been destroyed, and there are not moisture problems remaining. We will restore your home to its pre-mold damage condition "Like it never even happened."
When you detect a problem with mold damage, give SERVPRO of Avondale / Goodyear / Southwest Phoenix a call at (623) 537-9999 for your healthy environment.

How Do Mold Remediation Specialists Treat Your Goodyear Home?
10/22/2015 (Permalink)
Mold and Fungi Are OK in a Petri Dish, But Not in Your Home
Your Home in Goodyear Receives Mold Remediation from SERVPRO
Mold growth is an unwanted outcome of water intrusion necessitating mold remediation in some residential properties in Goodyear. In spite of the low humidity in Arizona, excessive water provides mold with the moist, wet setting in which it grows most effectively. Mold spores are prevalent in home environments with food sources in abundance, just needing sufficient moisture to develop colony strings. These fungi can quickly expand into large patches of mold. For this reason, it's critically important that property owners secure effective, expedient mold remediation services once they suspect that mold is growing in their homes. There is a wide range of mold cleanup methodologies that mold remediation experts from SERVPRO will provide to handle the fungus issue. Here are five of them:
Wipe-Down
The first and most effective method for mold removal is a wipe-down. This process involves removing unwanted mold from your non-porous surfaces. Because mold spores are microscopic, mold remediation specialists place primacy on wiping down any surface that may have been contaminated; it is not sufficient to just wipe down visible mold colony patches.
Vacuuming
In addition to wiping down surfaces, mold remediation specialists will use wet vacuuming procedures to remove standing water. This step is important because mold can accumulate in the presence of standing water in places like a wet or flooded basement.
HEPA Vacuuming
Another strategy mold remediation specialists will employ to help eradicate fungus is HEPA vacuuming. Vacuum cleaners that come equipped with HEPA filtration can capture and remove particles as tiny as 1 micron without recirculating them back into the interior ambient air. We are trained to utilize negative air pressure chambers to prevent mold from infesting previously clean rooms. HVAC units should never be running until the components, and ductwork have been sanitized.
Physical Removal
Once the mold has become entrenched and penetrates porous property material like wood, drywall, and concrete, removing and disposing of these materials is the best course of action. Professional mold remediation specialists handle this part of the process by carefully sealing materials contaminated by mold until they can be discarded off-site.
Chemical Treatments
Mold remediation specialists from SERVPRO use a wide range of chemical agents to kill mold. These chemicals can range from professional biocides to household bleach. Typically, remediation specialists prefer to physically remove mold and also implement strategies to prevent recurrence.
To get excellent mold remediation services, you need to hire the most excellent mold remediation company. That company is SERVPRO. Our IICRC-certified technicians are pleased to offer detail-oriented, results-centered services that get your property in mold-safe condition.

Prevent Commercial Fire Damage to a Phoenix Business By Being Prepared

Keep Your Fire Extinguishers Fully Charged
SERVPRO Will Restore Your Commercial Building in Phoenix After Fire Damage
A commercial property owner in Phoenix should be aware of how to inspect properly fire protection equipment. Doing so may help prevent fires and limit the adverse impact that fire damage has on the commercial property. Learn more about how to handle various pieces of equipment by reviewing the short outline provided below:
Fire Extinguishers
Each commercial building must be equipped with fire extinguishers. The number of fire extinguishers required will be determined by the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ). Fire extinguishers should be placed so that individuals do not have to cover more than 75 feet to reach them. Additionally, the extinguishers should be placed close to exits, so employees are not forced to move deeper into the building to grab one. Quickly subduing flames will limit fire damage. It's a good idea to discuss the necessary maintenance procedures with the responsible entity that periodically inspects and replaces these valuable fire-fighting tools.
??Emergency Lights/Exit Signs
Almost every commercial building has emergency lighting and exit signs. A commercial inspector is not required to determine whether the business owner has a need for them. However, when exit signs and emergency lights are present on the property, commercial inspectors should inspect them to ensure that they are functioning properly. Both pieces of equipment have test buttons that the inspector can press. Exit lights should remain illuminated constantly. When the test button actuated, it causes a power outage. In turn, this will cause a secondary source of power to light up the sign. Thus, the exit sign should be fully illuminated prior to the button being pressed. Once the button is pressed, a quick flash of light will indicate that the equipment has switched to its second source of power.
Fire Sprinkler/Standpipe Systems
Fire sprinkler systems will sometimes require testing by state-licensed personnel. The inspector will analyze the sprinkler system's components and educate the client about the equipment. Some of the maintenance requirements for this fire suppresant system include:
• Monthly verification that each of the control valves is opened
• Quarterly Main Drain Test conducted by in-house maintenance personnel
• Annual inspection of the system by a professional fire sprinkler contractor
Every commercial business owner in Phoenix wants to keep his property safe from fire and its resulting fire damage. By having the local fire marshall inspect on a fixed schedule, it can limit the likelihood of a fire. SERVPRO Water Damage Protocol for Your Avondale Home
After your residential property in Avondale has been subjected to water damage, obtaining professional restoration service is very important. Learn more about what the water restoration process entails and how to properly execute it by reviewing the short guide provided below:
The IICRC and the RIA
There are no government regulations in America dictating rules and regulations for water damage restoration. The IICRC (Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification) and the RIA (Restoration Industry Association) have outlined standards of care that can be used for guidelines and advice. In most cases, companies like SERVPRO use the IICRC's set of procedural standards. These standards are referred to as the S500. The IICRC S500 offers practical standards for use during the water damage restoration process. However, the standards do not attempt to teach people comprehensive procedures for water damage restoration. Individuals and companies who utilize the S500 must be aware of contemporary technological standards and must also abide by all regulations and procedures by local, state, and federal laws. Some of the rules and regulations can be found below:

The wide range of services offered by the water damage specialist will be customized to get your property back in order. One such service is the use of water sensing equipment to inspect areas of the home that have been affected by water damage. Tools and equipment used for this purpose include probes and infrared equipment. After the inspection is complete, the water remediation specialists will then dry your home and sanitize the cross contaminated areas. These regions of the home would also be deodorized. Throughout the cleaning process, the remediation specialist will use equipment such as dehumidifiers, air scrubbers, air movers, and wood floor drying systems to optimize the restoration process. Moisture meters measure specific water content in affected items. The proliferation of mold will be minimized by the above steps.
Monitoring
Even after the entire process of water damage restoration is completed, an expert will visit for a follow-up inspection. Your property will be monitored for moisture content, humidity, and temperature of the treated areas. If you have any questions during the monitoring process, the SERVPRO professionals will be glad to answer them.

What Happens After Contacting Goodyear Water Damage Experts for a Cleanup?
8/10/2015 (Permalink)
To ensure that a building is restored according to acceptable standards, it is vital to hire SERVPRO.
What Happens After Contacting Water Damage Experts for a Cleanup?
Reasons to Hire Water Remediation Experts
Most individuals never need to hire Goodyear water damage technicians and have no understanding of the services provided. However, the processes involved in a cleanup after a water disaster are complex. When technicians arrive at a water-soaked structure, they must determine the exact type of problems that have occurred in order to create a plan to effectively return a building to its previous condition as quickly as possible. To ensure that a building is restored according to acceptable standards, it is vital to hire SERVPRO.
Contact Water Damage Technicians for a Cleanup
After a flooding incident in a building, the most important thing to do is call the professional Goodyear water remediation company SERVPRO that has the industrial-strength equipment necessary to begin a cleanup within a few hours. When technicians begin the drying process immediately, it helps to prevent additional moisture damage to materials such as drywall and wood to avoid secondary problems that include mold growth and mildew odor. A Goodyear water damaged building is dangerous due to slippery surfaces but becomes more hazardous because of rotted floorboards and poor air quality.
How Technicians Dry a Building
The first thing that technicians do when arriving at a flooded structure is make sure that no more water is entering by turning off a main valve. In addition, they verify that gas and electricity is off to avoid explosions or shock injuries. Increasing air circulation is essential to reduce the humidity levels that lead to mildew and mold. Dehumidifiers and fan systems are installed in a building and powered with generators. If there is standing water in a basement of a building, then technicians use a sump pump to remove moisture with hoses.
Water Remediation Technicians are Responsible for Moisture Extraction
While reducing humidity levels in a flooded building, other technicians begin to extract water from floors, walls and ceilings with suctioning devices. When water has soaked into carpeting, it is lifted from the floor to suction water from underlying surfaces. Everything in the water-soaked building requires sanitizing with chemicals to eliminate pathogens that can cause illness. To prevent odors, the technicians also apply long-lasting deodorizers. When a building suffers from water damage caused by a disaster such as a flooding river or broken water pipe, an owner must contact their insurance provider to determine if repair costs are covered by their policy.
Locally Owned Company with National Resources
SERVPRO of Avondale/Goodyear/Southwest Phoenix is locally owned and operated—so we are part of this community too. Plan Ahead to Prevent Water Damage in a Commercial Building
How to Prevent Commercial Water Damage
If you are a business owner, then knowing how to prevent structural damage from leaking water pipes and overflowing toilets is vital to avoid suffering from the financial losses of property and goods. Statistics reveal that each day over 7,000 individuals report a storm, water or fire damage to their insurance agents while hiring professional remediation companies. Sometimes the damage from incidences such as a flood or leaking roof is minor, requiring only a small repair to a specific area of a building. However, extensive Southwest Phoenix commercial water damage from a flood or rainstorm can lead to big problems that require fast remediation to prevent additional moisture problems after a roof is destroyed on a retail establishment or office building.
Use this Monthly Checklist to Prevent Commercial Damage
One: Examine Rooftops
Use a sturdy ladder to perform these inspections on a commercial building:
• Check for water spots on exterior and interior surfaces
• Examine flashings and seals near heating and cooling vents
• Check rooftop drainage devices for blockages caused by debris
Two: Window Inspections
• Inspect all windowsills, joints and flashings for small leaks
• Examine locks and cranks for defects that do not seal out moisture
• Repair or Replace loose or broken windowpanes
Three: Examine Interior Walls
• Verify that holes near electrical wiring and plumbing fixtures are sealed
• Check door and window frames for defects that do not seal out moisture
• Make sure siding is not cracked or splitting
Fast Remediation is Necessary after Water Damage Occurs
Despite careful inspections and maintenance, Southwest Phoenix commercial water damage can still occur that requires a rapid response from business managers. Prepare by having a written emergency plan that covers all types of situations, including damage from fire hoses and sprinklers or bursting water pipes. Several employees should have access to the information needed for commercial water damage emergencies, including the telephone number of the local SERVPRO.
What to Include in an Emergency Response Plan

Make your Avondale Home Flood-Proof
7/25/2015 (Permalink)
When the water starts rising, you want to be sure that your home is protected against flood damage.
Make your Home Flood-Proof
When the water starts rising, you want to be sure that your home is protected against flood damage. As we have learned from the recent flooding, no area is safe from the destruction caused by flooding. Flood and Avondale storm damage can range from the minimal to the extreme, but there are steps you can take to help avoid any damage at all.
One of the easiest things a homeowner can do to help flood-proof their home is to regularly clean out the gutters. Sure, gutters can be helpful during heavy rains, but not when they are clogged with leaves, dirt, and debris. Clogged gutters can cause a variety of issues for homeowners, including Avondale flood damage, landscape damage, erosion and even harm your home's foundation.
Flood Prevention Ideas
Besides cleaning out your gutters, there are a number of other precautions and upgrades that you can do to help prevent flood and Avondale storm damage to your home. Remember, an ounce of prevention can go a long way to protecting what's important to you.
• Look into investing in a sump pump. These machines help pump the water out of your basement.
• Move those precious family heirlooms and memories from the basement. Maybe the attic or an upstairs closet may be a safer spot for them.
• You can always install a flood detection device. When a flood hits and the water seeps into your basement, an alarm will go off telling you there is water present.
During the Flood
Once your home starts flooding, there are some things you can do to continue saving personal items and your family. It should be noted that entering a flooded basement can be dangerous.
• Before entering your flooded basement, be sure to turn off the main power supply if you can. This is usually located near your power breakers.
• It can be common for water supplies to become contaminated. Instead of risking illness, sterilize your bathtub and sinks so you can fill them with healthy, potable drinking water.
• If you still have important family mementos in the basement, try to move them to higher ground away from the oncoming water.
• If things get to be too much, be sure to call a professional. The experts at SERVPRO have years of experience in helping homeowners safely clean and protect their homes.
