Memorial Day Weekend Water Safety

Planning on being poolside or lakeside this Memorial Day weekend? Practice these water safety tips!

Memorial Day weekend is upon us! After a year of lockdowns, curfews, school closures, and social distancing due to the covid-19 pandemic, we are now able to catch up and socialize with friends and family. We are finally starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel now that vaccines are available to the public and cases have been on the decline. Memorial Day weekend signifies the start of summer and what better way to kick it off then heading outdoors and enjoying some much needed time with your loved ones?

Whether you’ll be hanging out poolside or visiting one of our many nearby lakes, SERVPRO of Avondale/Goodyear/Southwest Phoenix has provided a list of some water safety tips.

Water Safety

• Make sure you have a pool fence to prevent babies and toddlers from going in.
• Always supervise children while they are out in the water. Never leave them unattended, especially those that cannot swim.
• Provide life jackets to those who aren’t able to swim and make sure they wear it properly.
• Do not swim alone, especially in lakes or rivers.
• Never jump on or push others when in the water.
• Be careful of currents, especially in lakes and rivers.
• Do not drink alcohol if you are operating a boat.
• It’s helpful to learn CPR and know of rescue techniques.

Smoking is still the leading cause of home fire deaths. Most of the fires start on balconies and porches. It’s easy for someone who is smoking to relax and fall asleep causing them to drop a lit cigarette to the floor and having the carpet catch on fire. If you do smoke, always make sure you are outside and that you are alert and aware. Make sure that you never leave a lit cigarette unattended and fully put out the lit cigarette when finished with it.

Fire Damage and Asbestos Cleanup In Home

Fires can be a devastating situation to deal with. No matter the size of the fire, the aftermath that takes place can be a distressing situation, especially when it involves your home. SERVPRO of Avondale/Goodyear/Southwest Phoenix has experience when it comes to fire damage cleanup. We have dealt with many homes that have gone through this traumatic event.

Our SERVPRO crew recently responded to a fire that took place at a residential property. The fire had started on the outside patio. The cause of the fire has not been determined. Half of the house fire caused damage to the studs. The remaining areas of the home had extensive fire and smoke damage. On top of the fire damage, the home also tested positive for asbestos. As a result, the entire home had to be gutted down to the studs of the asbestos that was present. In order to remove, an inventory abatement team was onsite to clean up and properly dispose of the asbestos containing material.

Have a safe and happy Memorial Day weekend!

Memorial Day is this weekend and just like that, the month of May is almost over which means summer is officially here in the Valley. Everyone here at SERVPRO of Avondale/Goodyear/Southwest Phoenix would like to wish you and your loved ones a safe and happy Memorial Day weekend. If you plan on doing some grilling outdoors, we hope you take some time to review these safety precautions to prevent any setbacks from occurring.

• Avoid wearing loose fitting clothing and if you have long hair, be sure to tie it back to prevent it from potentially catching on fire.
• Make sure you place your BBQ grill on a flat surface away from your home and any trees, shrubs or weeds that can potentially catch on fire from a spark.
• Be cautious when using lighter fluid. Spray it only in the grill.
• Prevent grease buildup by cleaning the grill.
• Don’t leave the grill unattended and have baking soda and a fire extinguisher on hand just in case.

Did you know that today, March 6^th, 2020 is National Employee Appreciation Day? Well, now you know! Here at SERVPRO of Avondale/Goodyear/Southwest Phoenix, we know that each and every one of our employees, from our administrative team, sales and marketing department, cleaning crew, and technicians play an incredibly important role in successfully running our business. Practice these grilling safety tips this Memorial Day Weekend!

Memorial Day weekend is finally here! For many of us, that means heading outside and firing up the grills for an outdoor celebration which typically signals the start of the summer season. Here at SERVPRO of Avondale/Goodyear/Southwest Phoenix, we wanted to put together some grilling safety tips to make sure everything runs smooth during your Memorial Day weekend with zero fires and injuries.

• Avoid wearing any loose clothing while grilling
• If you’re using a propane grill, be sure to check the propane tank for leaks
• Grill outside away from your home or any other building structures
• Do not grill around any weeds, trees or dry brush
• Grill on a flat and stable surface to avoid the grill from tipping over
• Take extra precaution when using charcoal lighter fluid. Do not spray it elsewhere, only in the grill.
• Keep the grill clean to avoid grease buildup
• Do not leave your grill unattended
• Have baking soda readily available to put out any grease fires that may start and also a fire extinguisher. Do not use water to put out flames.

Our Lunch & Networking event at Top Golf was a success! Thank you to all who attended.

A lot of meaningful connections can be made when it comes to networking. SERVPRO of Avondale/Goodyear/Southwest Phoenix takes tremendous pride when it comes to business community involvement. We love to make connections each and every day. From attending weekly networking groups, Chamber events, Ribbon Cuttings and Grand Openings, we see the importance of making meaningful networking connections to let people know about who you are and how you can help them. Sometimes it’s not about what you know but rather WHO you know.

Each year, SERVPRO of Scottsdale and SERVPRO of Avondale/Goodyear/Southwest Phoenix, holds our annual Lunch & Networking event at Top Golf in Scottsdale to allow individuals from different business backgrounds to meet one another and to see how they can help one another in a fun, casual environment. This event was well attended and included business professionals from insurance, real estate, home inspection, construction, landscaping, AC repair, and network security. It was a nice day for folks to step away from their desk, meet new people, enjoy free food and beverages, and hit a few golf balls.

This particular customer called us when they had a water leak from their kitchen sink which had been leaking for quite some time. They initially thought the issue had been fixed but it turns out, the leak was still occurring. They discovered water covering their kitchen floor so they gave SERVPRO a call. The customer also noticed a smell coming from their cabinet beneath the kitchen sink where mold growth was discovered. The moisture was still present from previous water leaks which had caused the mold to grow over time. When you have water damage that you’re dealing with, make sure to give us a call right away so we can take the proper steps to fully drying out and restoring your property to prevent mold growth. Holiday Safety Tips for Avondale, Goodyear and Southwest Phoenix Residents

When it comes to Christmas decorations, follow these tips to keep your family safe.

It’s the most wonderful time of the year, isn’t it? Cooler temps mean the holiday season is in full swing! Temperatures here in Avondale, Goodyear and Southwest Phoenix have finally cooled down to where we actually get to make use of our car heater in the mornings! But we’re not complaining, these cooler temperatures are always a nice welcome after the 115 degree summer temperatures we face.

With Christmas just around the corner, SERVPRO of Avondale/Goodyear/Southwest Phoenix wants you to be safe. We’ve put together a list of Holiday Safety Tips as it’s important to be reminded of general safety tips to keep you and your loved ones safe when it comes to decorations this season.

1. Inspect electrical decorations such as Christmas lights, lighted garland and Christmas displays. Make sure the sockets aren’t cracked or damaged. Also check for exposed wires and loose connections as you want to prevent shocks and a fire from occurring.
2. Protect electrical cords from damage such as being squashed by furniture or against walls. Do not have them running underneath rugs or hang them using staples.
3. Don’t overload the electrical sockets. This is a common cause for holiday fires. Plug only one high-wattage appliance into each outlet at a time.
4. Avoid connecting more than three string lights as this can blow a fuse.
5. Do not connect extension cords together. Take time to find the correct length to avoid them getting tangled or stretched.
6. Keep decorations such as garland, tinsel, crepe paper and anything other decorations that are flammable away from heat sources such as a fireplace, candles, and space heaters. Be sure to keep them at least 3 feet away.
7. If you have a fresh Christmas tree, don’t forget to water it daily. A dry tree can quickly erupt in flames.
8. Keep an eye on candles that are lit. Never leave lit candles unattended. Instead, try opting for battery opted candles.
9. When hanging lights outside, do not use nails or staples as they can cause damage to the wires. Use hooks or hangers which are recommended for outdoor usage.
10. Always remember to unplug the lights when you are away from home or asleep.
